Small Batch Production

Landfill

Up to 85% of all textiles end up in landfill every year. As the linked article says, that’s enough to fill Sydney harbour annually!

Fast fashion is one of the major reasons for this. The big fashion labels will make up to 5 fashion lines per year and some dump their excess stock in landfill or burn it. This is because they would rather dispose of unsold clothes rather than sell them cheap, which could devalue their brand.

The economics of clothes manufacturing means that it is more profitable to produce in large batches due to economies of scale. The business model is to produce large quantities, sell what you can, clear out or destroy what you cannot and then move on to the next line. As a result, the fashion industry is the second largest polluter on the planet!

At Sharp Minds we only produce are t-shirts in small batches to reduce wastage and our impact on the environment. We would rather pay more to manufacture our t-shirts in small batches than produce in large batches to lower our costs. Small batch production is the reason you may see us out of stock at times but we believe that being out of stock is a small downside to helping reduce wastage.

Check out our Mission and Values to see how Sharp Minds is different and help us change the world, one t-shirt at a time.
